Our method

How we rank routes.

The order is designed to be explainable: eligibility first, then the features you need, your existing banking position, standard cost and simplicity. Commission is kept outside the ranking score.

1. Remove routes that genuinely do not fit

We first remove options that cannot serve the selected income type, a requested full-accounting need or a banking restriction the visitor has chosen. We do not automatically remove an Income Tax product merely because the visitor is VAT registered: HMRC allows more than one compatible product, so in that situation we flag the need for a separate VAT route instead.

2. Match the features requested

A visitor who only wants submissions should not be pushed towards a large accounting package merely because it has more features. Someone asking for broader accounts, on the other hand, should not receive a submission-only bridge as the top result.

3. Account for the bank relationship that already exists

If a visitor already has an account that includes MTD software, that can materially change the economics. The finder gives that existing route proper weight. If the visitor says they will not open another account, account-required alternatives are excluded.

4. Compare normal ongoing cost

We rank on standard ongoing prices rather than short introductory discounts. Where the provider splits the year into separate charges, we combine the necessary components. For example, a quarterly bridging price and a separately charged annual submission are treated as one complete-year route.

5. Apply simplicity and working style

A spreadsheet-capable route gets extra weight when the visitor wants to keep a spreadsheet. A phone-friendly route gets extra weight when the visitor mainly works on a phone. These are fit signals, not subjective star ratings.

6. Keep commercial data separate

Affiliate commission is not a scoring field. Commercial status is used only to show an Ad disclosure when a paid link eventually exists.

What “best fit” means

The first result is the highest-scoring checked route for the answers supplied. It is not a claim that the provider is the best bank or best accounting software for everybody. The result explains both the reasons it scored well and the catches that still need checking.

What we do not score

We do not publish subjective customer-service or ease-of-use scores without a repeatable evidence base. We do not score banks as financial products. We also do not use temporary promotional discounts to make one provider look artificially cheaper than another.

Source hierarchy

  1. HMRC and GOV.UK for MTD rules.
  2. Provider pricing, feature and support pages for product facts.
  3. Affiliate programme information only for commercial disclosure, never ranking.
